Sago Bites

Branding, Visual Identity, Packaging Design

With climate change continuing to intensify, more action, like implementing sustainable packaging solutions and reducing meat consumption, is needed to prevent further harm to the environment and our lives. Sago Bites is a high-protein snack concept made from sago palm weevil larvae. It is inspired by the traditional sago grub delicacies of Southeast Asia, Tropical Africa, Papua New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia.

Concept

Sago Bites aims to deliver something fun and disruptive to the world of healthy snacks. It’s a meaty and sustainable snack that satisfies cravings, sparks joy, and doesn’t compromise on taste or health.

Application

The branding draws heavily from the sago palm weevil form, but is simplified and rounded for a friendly feel. The grub icon works individually as a playful module but collectively forms a textured brand pattern. In addition, the various mouth motifs embody the brand’s lively personality and literally represent the “Bites” in Sago Bites.

Packaging

Biomimicry was the main consideration when developing this packaging concept. The segments on the sago palm weevil inspired the idea of 4 single consumption units being joined together. Everything is secured by a heavyweight paper belly band that provides customers browsing the shelves with branding and product information. The packaging is primarily constructed from fully recyclable and compostable paperboard with minimum material usage in mind.
